Our lovely and peaceful Rivers people, welcome to another episode of RivEthics on Radio, our character-building weekend show. Remember that you can never lose out on skills. The skills you acquire today turn into capacity tomorrow. This episode is in commemoration of the United Nations World Youth Skills Day, which comes up on the 15th of July.
By way of a background, young people represent the promise of changing societies for the better. Yet, there are not enough jobs for young people. Millions are also not transitioning into decent work and are at the risk of social exclusion. More than 200 million young people are working but earning under US$2 a day. The youth employment crisis, considerably aggravated by the global economic and financial crisis, now requires governments, employers and workers to work even harder to promote, create and maintain decent and productive jobs.
Youth unemployment and underemployment bring very high social and economic negatives and threaten the fabric of our societies. Failure to generate sufficient decent jobs can result in prolonged frightening effects on young people. There is a burning need to reverse this ugly drift. Unless immediate and vigorous action is taken, the global community faces the dingy heritage of a disheveled and hopeless generation of young people. Investing in youths is investing in the present and future of our societies.
The aim of World Youth Skills Day is to advocate for skills as an important factor to improve young people’s transitions to decent work, and to highlight the crucial role of skilled youth in addressing today’s most challenging global issues.
Our guest speaker for this week, Mr. Emeka Nobis is a writer and business leadership consultant. He will throw more light on the topic. Please enjoy the episode.
