Greetings to the wonderful people of Rivers State, and welcome to another episode of Rivethics on Radio, our character-building weekend show. Please remember that strong women build their world and attract their kind. This episode is in commemoration of the International Day for the Elimination of
Violence against Women, coming up November 25.
Violence against women and girls is one of the most widespread, persistent and devastating human rights violations in our world today and remains largely unreported due to the impunity, silence, stigma and shame surrounding it. In general terms, it manifests itself in physical, sexual and psychological forms, encompassing intimate partner violence, sexual violence and harassment , human trafficking, female genital mutilation and child marriage.
A look at the disturbing statistics show the following:
• 1 in 3 women and girls experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime, most frequently by an intimate partner and 71% of all human trafficking victims worldwide are women and girls,
• Worldwide, almost 750 million women and girls alive today were married before their 18th birthday; while 200 million women and girls have undergone female genital mutilation (FGM).
• Violence against women is as serious a cause of death and incapacity among women of reproductive age as cancer, and a greater cause of ill health than traffic accidents and malaria combined.
We join the UN and all men and women of good will to call on governments, the private sector, civil society and people everywhere to take a firm stand against sexual violence and misogyny, as we promote women’s rights and equal opportunities.
Our guest speaker today is, Mrs. Faith Abasa, a film maker and broadcast journalist. She will be sharing her insights on the subject. Please enjoy the episode.
