Greetings to the great people of Rivers State, and welcome to another episode of Rivethics on Radio, our character-building weekend show. Please remember that Prevention is not merely better than cure, it’s less expensive, less painful and less traumatic. Our topic today is the Health Effect of Soot in Rivers State.
We are having another episode on the soot saga consecutively from last week because of the seriousness of the challenge and the need for Rivers people to be well informed. The medical consequences could be quite challenging for Rivers people and that is why we need to take precautionary measures while the problem is being tackled by the authorities. It is important therefore for individuals, families and communities to be knowledgeable on all the safeguards recommended by experts in order to stay safe. This becomes more important when low-immune members of society are involved, like the very young ones (1- 5 years) and the elderly (65 years and above). And of course everyone else in between.
We are well aware that the United Nations is currently in Rivers State investigating the cause of the soot, towards finding a lasting solution. Representatives of the relevant UN bodies, World Health Organisation (WHO) and United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP), have commenced full investigations as reported in the National press media. This intervention was in response to the lingering soot challenge which has now attracted UN attention.
There is no doubt that the combined efforts of the authorities will soon yield results and the soot challenge will become a thing of the past. Rivers people should avoid politicising this issue and pull together with the authorities to solve the challenge once and for all.
In the meantime, we should be very deliberate and precautionary, endeavouring to protect ourselves from harm by following the advice of professionals. Our aim in last week’s episode of Rivethics and today’s is to place all relevant information about the soot challenge at the disposal of Rivers people for your necessary action.
Our guest speaker today is Dr. Omosivie Maduka, Consultant Public Health Physician University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital and Senior Lecturer in Public Health, University of Port Harcourt. She is also the Publicity Secretary of Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria, Rivers State Branch. She will throw more light on this topic. Please enjoy the episode.
Our loving Rivers People, please remember to always let your manners speak for you.
God bless and keep you and your families and God bless Rivers State.
Her Excellency, Justice (Mrs.) Eberechi Suzzette Nyesom-Wike, the Wife of the Governor of Rivers State and initiator of the RivEthics Character Development Programme.
